Get Lost
How to get lost:
Lose your phone and...
Leave your map at home.
Drive down an unfamiliar street,
Drop Acid,
Trust your gut,
Your instincts will fail you.
Follow your heart,
It will lead you astray.
I didn't know I was getting lost when I filled my VW Golf to capacity with the most generous of necessities and pointed her towards the West Coast this past summer. There were loose itineraries padded liberally with time to create adventures. I embarked dedicated to being open to follow, to embrace, whatever crossed my path. Four hours from home my car lost her desire to continue with me. I was suddenly freed of my plans, expectations, and more importantly -- control. The need to get lost became my axiom, which I applied indiscriminately.
Getting lost requires the willingness to go down the wrong path in faith that there is value in the discovery. These works are informed by my time spent adrift, and forged by giving up control. I appropriate these accidents and weave them with my intuitive markings. I use watercolor manipulated with materials that oppose its constitution, such as alcohols and salts, resulting in a guided unpredictability.
